Lejos del Hogar, Far from Home - Latino Photo Project

This adult education program was taught by Colombian-born photojournalist Luz Elena Castro with help from community members with professional photography and computer skills. Students were drawn from the West Marin Latino community through the West Marin Literacy Project. Each year a theme is selected and students work towards a photo essay for their end of the year exhibition at Gallery Route One. Themes have been community focused, and have brought the Latino and the English-speaking populations closer together “Who Opens the Doors of the Town in the Morning,” focused on the workers in Point Reyes’ businesses; “Bridge Builders,” highlighted the area’s service providers. “Where We Live” brought to light the precarious housing situation experienced by both Anglo and Latino families. In 2008 “La Vida, Work and Family” showed Latino men and women as hard workers and loving parents.
Photography sessions in the field and classroom critiques and discussions are held winter through spring. In the fall students select, print and mount their work for their exhibition. Students from this project now supply photographs for the local newspaper, The West Marin Citizen.
